The second threat is fuel efficiency which is combined with recent media attention to environmental problems, the consistently high price of gasoline has pushed many consumers toward fuel efficient cars. In May 2008 GM's truck sales were 35% less than a year earlier, resulting in plans to reduce truck production by 300,000 units for 2008. The government applied additional pressure to gas-guzzling car manufacturers in December of 2007 with a new energy bill that mandates 35 mpg for all cars, SUVs, and small trucks sold in the U.S. Unlike, Toyota Motor (TM), Honda Motor Company (HMC), and Volkswagen (VLKAY), GM is far behind in fuel efficient technology, suggesting that the new bill will increase GM's productions costs as the firm plays catch-up. At the same time, GM may have been wise in putting off investments in alternative fuel cars, thereby allowing other companies to bear the expense of determining which technologies were in fact feasible.

Strength of the GM

Date: February 19,2009.
Time: 9:37 pm
Location: Home
The second organizational strength is they had a wholly owned insurance and financing businesses but currently own 49% of GMAC. This allows buyers to finance and insure the car or truck at one place.

The third strength is that GM owns slightly more than 50% of South Korea’s GM Daewoo Auto Technology.

This allows GM to market both GM and Daewoo products in the U.S and South Korea and the world.
It shares the profits of both companies. It also allows them to have different brands and types of cars.

The fourth strength is that in September of 2007, General Motors and United Auto Workers (UAW) union reached a monumental agreement that will allow GM to shift $51 billion in healthcare liabilities to the United Auto Workers.
The deal impacts 74,000 GM workers and will also permit GM to replace some of its $70/hour employees with far cheaper employees. This signals an essential shift in the cost structure for GM, which will allow these US auto manufacturers to better compete with rising Toyota Motor (TM) and Honda Motor Company (HMC).

Opportunites for the General Motor

Date: February 18, 2009
Time: 11:42 pm

The third opportunity which General Motors Corporation has to achieve is improved economic performance with Fuel Economy & Alternative Fuels.

General Motors Corporation has the largest national market in the United States, followed by China, Canada, the United Kingdom and Germany.

The GM alternatives are leading the way toward innovative energy solutions.
The Hybrid concept is the best way to achieve market share in the United States and the rest of the world.

Hybrid vehicles have two engines, one gas and the other electric. Gas power starts the vehicle, and then the electric motor starts. Batteries are recharged by braking or coasting, and the gas motor kicks in while climbing hills or passing. Hybrid engines get more miles per gallon so that it cost less in gas to run.

GM has a somewhat tarnished image in fuel efficiency, with its recent electric car controversy and its extensive line of fuel-guzzling SUVs and trucks.

Online Shopping

I had bad experience with online shopping. Last year on June I bought my telephone battery online, later on July 14, 2008 I receive call from my American express credit card company and asked my permission if they could approve my transaction. I said no because someone was trying to use my card by online shopping and I had alert on my card. After two days someone used my discover card with balance $834.00. I got bad experience by online shopping. I like to go to the store and choose the product and pay. I think online shopping or dating or watching adult movies are not so safe. I like to pay my credit card bills online because I trust they have powerful software to control their privacy. I read this article which describes the privacy on line system.

Quality Control:
In the beginning of 1906, Sears opened a 40-acre, $ 5 Million mail order plant and office building on Chicago’s West Side and contained the largest business building in the world.
During the same time, the company began insisting not only on accurate catalog descriptions but also on quality merchandise. The improvement in the quality of Sears’ goods goes hand in hand with the story of Sears Laboratories.
I foregoing before each company has its own laboratories to keep the quality up to date. I work in the CITGO gas station, and sometimes company sent own inspection teem, who took a sample to bring to the laboratory to see if we are serving the right gas to the customers or we are adding some stuff in the gas or if we are buying from non CITGO company gas. They opened first laboratory in 1911 and became known as “watchdog of the catalog.” Merchandise was tested and minimum standards were set. Sear also started to offer credit
